मार दिया, मर गए, खबर छप गई और बात है। लेकिन जिस तरह कल टीवी वालों ने मृत्यु को लाइव दिखलाया मैं रात भर सो नहीं सका। मुझे याद है कई साल पहले केरल में एक प्रोफेसर भाषण देते-देते अचानक हृदयघात से मर गए थे और मेरे एक वरिष्ठ साथी ने मेरे लाख मना करने के बाद भी उसे लाइव बना कर टीवी न्यूज़ चैनल पर दिखलाया था। देखिए लाइव डेथ। देखिए आदमी कैसे मरता है।

बाद में जो हुआ वो अलग कहानी है। सच्चाई ये है कि रात नौ बजे जो एंकर थी, वो खबर पढ़ते-पढ़ते लाइव शो से उठ गई थी। विचलित हो गई थी लाइव डेथ देख कर। ऐसा पहली बार हुआ था जब एंकर ने एंकरिंग करने से मना कर दिया था। मुझे बहुत नाज हुआ था उस एंकर पर।

हर चीज की एक सीमा होती है। मुझे सच में हैरानी है कि कभी अतीक अहमद को लाइव पेशाब करते दिखलाने वाले न्यूज चैनलों ने उसे गोली मारते, खून उड़ते लाइव दिखलाया। ये पेशाब करते दिखलाने से भी अधिक जघन्य था। अगर यही खबर है, इतनी ही खबर की समझ है, तो मुझे डूब मरना चाहिए कि मैं कभी पत्रकार था।

मैं मृत्यु को इस तरह नहीं देख सकता। किसी को नहीं देखना चाहिए। आप मुझे कायर कहिए, संवेदनशील कहिए पर क्या नहीं दिखलाना है इसका ग्रामर तय होना ज़रूरी है। मुझे नहीं लगता है कि भारत सरकार की गाइड लाइंस में कहीं ऐसा होगा कि इस तरह वीभत्स दृश्य को बार-बार दिखलाया जाए। और अगर सरकार की आंखें बंद हैं तो मेरी ओर से-

मैं उस दिन अमेरिका में ही था, जिस दिन न्यूयार्क में दो विमान ट्वीन टावर से टकराए थे और हज़ारों लोग मारे गए थे। तब सीएनएन न्यूज़ चैनल उसे लाइव कवर कर रहा था। आपने दो इमारतों को जमीन में ध्वस्त होते हुए देखा होगा। हजारों लोग मरे थे। लेकिन क्या आपको एक भी शव दिखा? खून के छींटे भी आपको दिखे? 

कुछ चीज़ें नहीं दिखलाने की होती हैं। 

मुझ जैसे बहुत से कमजोर दिल के लोग होते हैं। भावुक दिल के होते हैं। इस तरह टीवी पर न्यूज दिखलाया जाएगा तो भले कुछ लोग ताली पीटें लेकिन मेरे पत्रकार होने पर तो मेरे मन में सवाल उठेगा ही। क्या सचमुच मैं कभी पत्रकार था? या फिर अब पत्रकारिता यही हो गई है? अगर हो गई है तो मेरी ओर से-

अपराध, अपराधी का अंत अपनी जगह है। लाइव मर्डर अपनी जगह। 

मैंने अतीक अहमद को लाइव पेशाब करते दिखलाने पर ऐलान किया था कि मुझे लगता है कि मैं कभी पत्रकार था ही नहीं। आज मैं ऐलानिया कहता हूं कि अब इस देश में पत्रकारिता ही नहीं बची है। संजय सिन्हा की ये बात आप नोट कर लीजिए कि आप अपने परिवार के साथ ‘केवल वयस्कों के लिए’ वाली फिल्म देख लेंगे उसका इतना बुरा असर घर पर नहीं होगा, लेकिन न्यूज़ चैनल देखेंगे तो एक दिन...

प्लीज़ न्यूज चैनल देखना बंद कर दीजिए। इसलिए बंद कर दीजिए कि ये देख कर आपके नौनिहालों की संवेदना मर जाएगी। याद रखिएगा ये बात आपसे वो आदमी कह रहा है, जिसने अपना पूरा जीवन देश के लगभग सभी सबसे नामी न्यूज़ संस्थानों को दिया है। अगर आप ऐसा मानते हैं कि इन सबमें कभी मेरी भी भूमिका रही होगी तो प्लीज आज फिर यही मान लीजिए कि बिल्ली नौ सौ चूहे खा कर हज की बात कर ही रही है। 

असल में मेरी चिंता आप हैं ही नहीं। भावी पीढ़ी है। आप उसे अगर ये सब दिखलाएंगे तो वो क्या बनेगी, बताने की ज़रूरत नहीं। समय रहते समझ लीजिए।

गलती से एक बार कोई चैनल कुछ दिखला दे तो माफी भी बनती है। लेकिन बार-बार? बार-बार? अगर ये टीआरपी है तो संजय सिन्हा की ओर से-

यकीन कीजिए मैं रात भर विचलित रहा हूं लाइव डेथ देख कर। इस संसार में मुझ जैसे कमजोर लोग बहुत हैं। ये सब देखने की ‘मजबूती’ में कहीं हम खुद अपराधी न बन जाएं। 

आप मुझे कोसिए। मुझ पर हंसिए। पर मैं इस खेल से बाहर हूं। मेरे लिए जितना महत्वपूर्ण भाषा में व्याकरण है, उतना ही महत्वपूर्ण जीवन में भी…

आपने अपने बच्चों को सत्य कथा, मनोहर कहानियां जैसी पत्रिकाएं नहीं पढ़ने दीं। आप उन्हें ये सब देखने देंगे? ये देख कर बच्चे क्या सीखेंगे, क्या समझेंगे? जो देख रहे हैं उस पर-

जिस दौर में आज मीडिया है, मुझे भूख से मर जाना मंजूर है, पर पत्रकारिता नहीं। पहले कभी गलती से टीवी न्यूज़ चैनल पर लाइव में किसी ने गाली दे दी होती थी और वो आन एयर चल जाता था तो संपादक को माफी मांगनी पड़ती थी। कल सब व्याकरण गायब थे। मुझे पहले लगा कि शायद लाइव टेलीकास्ट हो रहा होगा, एक बार दिख गया। लेकिन बार-बार? इसका मतलब ये सब सोच समझ कर? अगर यही पत्रकारिता है तो -

Killed, died, the news got published and that's it. But the way the TV people showed the death live yesterday, I could not sleep the whole night. I remember many years ago a professor in Kerala died suddenly of a heart attack while giving a speech and one of my senior colleagues made it live and showed it on a TV news channel even after my refusal. Watch Live Death. See how a man dies.

What happened afterwards is a different story. The truth is that the anchor who was there at 9 pm got up from the live show while reading the news. Was distracted seeing live death. This was the first time that the anchor refused to anchor. I was very proud of that anchor.

Everything has a limit. I am really surprised that the news channels which once showed Atiq Ahmed urinating live, showed him being shot and bleeding live. It was more heinous than being shown peeing. If this is the news, this is the understanding of the news, then I should drown that I was once a journalist.

I can't see death like this. No one should see. You call me coward, call me sensitive but it is necessary to decide the grammar of what not to be shown. I do not think that there will be anywhere in the guidelines of the Government of India that such a gruesome scene should be shown again and again. And if the eyes of the government are closed, then from my side-

I was in America the day two planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York, killing thousands. Then CNN news channel was covering it live. You must have seen two buildings collapsing into the ground. Thousands of people had died. But did you see a single dead body? Did you see the splatters of blood too?

Some things are not meant to be shown.

There are many weak hearted people like me. They are of emotional heart. If news is shown on TV in this way, some people may clap, but if I am a journalist then questions will arise in my mind. Was I ever really a journalist? Or is this what journalism has become now? If it has happened, then from my side-

After showing Atiq Ahmed urinating live, I declared that I think I was never a journalist. Today I say openly that there is no journalism left in this country. Note Sanjay Sinha's point that if you watch a film 'only for adults' with your family, it will not have such a bad effect at home, but if you watch the news channel, one day...

Please stop watching news channels. That's why stop it because seeing this the sensitivity of your children will die. Remember, this man is telling you this, who has given his entire life to almost all the most renowned news organizations of the country. At first I thought that maybe live telecast would be happening, I saw it once. But often? Does it mean after thinking all this? If this is journalism then -
